Anna Franceschini’s research investigates objects, artefacts, and commodities through the ways in which they are displayed, questioning their role within the aesthetics of capital. At the centre of her practice lies cinema understood as movement: kinetic sculptures, performances, and bachelor machines form a cinema “made by other means”, in which animation—whether accidental or mechanically induced—becomes a tool for eliciting wonder and empathy towards things. Her films have been selected for the Rotterdam International Film Festival, Locarno Film Festival, Torino Film Festival, and Courtisane in Ghent. Solo exhibitions have been presented at Triennale Milano (2023), Mudam Luxembourg (2023), Kunstverein Düsseldorf, Spike Island Bristol, Museion Bolzano, and MACRO Rome. In 2017, her project Cartaburro won the Italian Council grant promoted by the Italian Ministry of Culture; in 2019 she realised BUSTROFEDICO, a special commission for the Italian Pavilion at the 58th Venice Biennale; and in 2022 she received a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant. Her works are held in the collections of the Centre Pompidou in Paris, Les Abattoirs in Toulouse, the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco, MACRO Rome, and GAMeC Bergamo. Since 2022 she has been an Art-Based Researcher within AN-ICON, an ERC-funded research project at the University of Milan. She lives and works in Milan.
