Iva Lulashi’s painting begins with film stills, analogue video footage, and propaganda material from Albania’s communist period—a history only partially experienced firsthand—which she combines with erotic imagery to blur the boundary between the visual language of communist propaganda and representations of desire. In her work, eroticism is never an end in itself but becomes a field of psychological and political inquiry, exposing structures of power and the cultural legacies of repression through an explicitly female perspective. Her Eroticommunism series marked her first solo exhibition at Prometeo Gallery in Milan. In 2024, she represented Albania at the 60th Venice Biennale with Love as a Glass of Water, inspired by Alexandra Kollontai’s “glass of water” theory. Represented by Massimo De Carlo, she moved to Italy in 1997, graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice in 2016, and lives and works in Milan.
