“Si tratta di un disegno preparatorio per un’incisione su legno, base per un’altalena. Faceva parte di una serie di disegni realizzati a partire dal 2012 dal titolo “Sentire silenzio/quando ti aspetti rumore”. Tutte figure umane che si chiudono le orecchie a protezione. Se protezione da un “suono” interno o esterno, non è chiaro. I leoni sono quelli dei bassorilievi delle scene di caccia del re assiro Ashurbanipal”.
Claudia Losi’s practice begins from the theoretical and practical observation of the natural and inhabited environment, with a compass that points towards the natural sciences, ethnology, geology, geography, cartography, literature and poetry. Her works are the outcome of long-lasting projects that bring the dilated rhythms of nature into juxtaposition with the briefer rhythms of human existence — from the slow transformations of lichens and glaciers to the geological maps of the lands she walks. Walking is itself a tool of knowledge in her practice; embroidery and sewing are the recurring gestures, used both to mimic the slow pace of natural processes and as metaphors for the tangle of relationships, histories, sensitivities and cultural specificities that constitute a community. The long-running *Balena Project*, begun in the early 2000s, took the form of a 24-metre fabric whale that travelled through art venues, natural history museums, schools, squares, ports and shorelines, accumulating stories and gathering communities around it.
She studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna and at the University of Bologna’s Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, and was selected in 1998 for the Advanced Course in Visual Arts of the Fondazione Antonio Ratti. In the mid-1990s she co-founded the Studio Italiano di Geopoetica with Francesco Benozzo and Matteo Meschiari, affiliated with Kenneth White’s Institut International de Géopoétique. Her work has been presented at Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, MAXXI in Rome, Galleria Monica De Cardenas in Milan, Museo Marino Marini in Florence, Stenersen Museum in Oslo, Ikon Gallery in Birmingham, the Quadriennale di Roma and the Sharjah Biennial 8. She lives and works in Piacenza.
