
Massimo Bartolini’s practice encompasses sound sculpture, installation, photography, video, and performative works involving actors, audiences, and architectural space, investigating the relationships between humanity, nature, and architecture. He participated in the Venice Biennale in 1999, 2009, 2013, and 2024, when he represented Italy with the Italian Pavilion project Due qui/To Hear, curated by Luca Cerizza, a work centred on listening and community-building. He also took part in Documenta 13, Kassel (2012), and Manifesta 4, Frankfurt (2002). His work has been exhibited at institutions including PS1, New York; Abteiberg Museum, Mönchengladbach; GAM Turin; Museu de Serralves, Porto; Ikon Gallery, Birmingham; Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh; SMAK, Ghent; Museo Marino Marini, Florence; Fondazione Merz, Turin; and Centro Pecci, Prato. His works are held in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, MAXXI Rome, Castello di Rivoli, and the Fondació La Caixa. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence in 1989, teaches at UNIBZ in Bolzano and NABA in Milan, and lives and works in Cecina.
