Vedovamazzei is the duo formed by Stella Scala (Naples, 1964) and Simeone Crispino (Naples, 1962), who have been working together under this name since 1991. Adopted from a doorplate found in the streets of Naples, the moniker dissolves their individual identities into a single, unstable signature. Their practice unfolds across painting, sculpture, drawing, installation and photography, defining itself as “desperately ironic” in its engagement with ideologies, preconceptions and the slippages of contemporary visual culture. Familiar objects and images are reinterpreted to produce unexpected associations, prompting the world to be seen from new perspectives.

Their work has been exhibited at MAXXI in Rome, MART in Rovereto, MAMbo in Bologna, GAM in Turin, Castello di Rivoli, Madre in Naples, Palazzo Reale in Milan and S.M.A.K. in Ghent, among others, and they have taken part in Dublin Contemporary, the Kwangju Biennale and Art Basel’s Public Art Projects. They live and work in Milan.
