Aya Onodera’s painting is rooted in the invisible. Inner landscapes, memories of places, and sensory vibrations are translated into pictorial matter on paper and canvas, giving form to intangible traces of experience. Her Sea Veins series processes the impact of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, an event that profoundly affected her. She has held solo exhibitions at the Rias Ark Museum of Art in Kesennuma (2019) and in galleries in Berlin and Leipzig. She graduated in Painting from Joshibi Junior College of Art and Design in Tokyo in 2005, studied at the Universität der Künste Berlin from 2007, and graduated in 2011 under Burkhard Held. In 2012, she received a Japanese Government Overseas Study Scholarship. She lives and works in Berlin.
