Gian Maria Tosatti’s practice is centred on large-scale site-specific installations conceived for entire buildings or urban environments. Developed through long-term investigations into identity—both political and spiritual—and the communities connected to specific places, his projects transform architecture into a narrative and experiential medium. Early cycles include Devozioni (2005–2011), comprising ten installations across ten buildings in Rome, and Sette Stagioni dello Spirito (2013–2016), a seven-part work that unfolded throughout the city of Naples. In 2022, he represented Italy at the 59th Venice Biennale with Storia della notte e destino delle comete, serving as the sole artist of the Italian Pavilion. In 2023, he presented the major solo exhibition NOw/here at Pirelli HangarBicocca in Milan, curated by Vicente Todolí. In 2015, ArtReview included him among the “Future Greats”, naming him one of the thirty most significant artists of his generation. He is also a columnist for Corriere della Sera and Opera Viva. He trained at the Centre for Experimental and Theatrical Research in Pontedera and lives and works between Naples and New York.
