Olaf Breuning has been creating works since the mid-1990s that introduce viewers to surreal worlds through performance, film, photography, sculpture, drawing, and painting. Drawing inspiration from popular culture, he incorporates humour as a means of offering unexpected perspectives on the rules and structures of global society. He has exhibited at Palais de Tokyo in Paris, Chisenhale Gallery in London, the Whitney Museum and MoMA in New York, and the Migros Museum in Switzerland, and has participated in the Whitney Biennial. His works are held in collections including Kunsthaus Zürich, the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Copenhagen, and the Ellipse Foundation in Portugal. He studied photography in Zurich and lives and works in New York.
