Ugo La Pietra’s practice moves seamlessly across architecture, visual art, design, cinema, music, comics, and publishing. Since 1960, he has defined himself as a researcher within the systems of communication and visual culture. His theoretical work culminated in the concept of the Disequilibrating System, an autonomous expression of Radical Design, as well as in major sociological investigations applied to domestic and urban environments, including La casa telematica (MoMA, New York, 1972; Milan Fair, 1983), Rapporto tra Spazio reale e Spazio virtuale (Triennale Milano, 1979 and 1992), and La casa neoeclettica (Abitare il Tempo, 1990). He has curated exhibitions for Triennale Milano, the Venice Biennale, the Musée d’Art Contemporain de Lyon, and the FRAC Centre in Orléans, and promoted research groups including Gruppo del Cenobio, Global Tools, and Cooperativa Maroncelli. He graduated in Architecture from the Politecnico di Milano in 1964 and lives and works in Milan.
