Tony Lewis’s practice focuses on the relationship between semiotics and language in order to address social and political themes such as race, power, communication, and labour. Lewis creates drawings using graphite dust, pencil, and paper, tracing and developing abstract narratives and reflections on gesture while pushing the boundaries of drawing and the possibilities of abstraction. Through processes of separating, rearranging, and erasing text, he opens up unexpected readings and meanings. His work was included in the Whitney Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 2014 and is represented by Massimo De Carlo. He lives and works in Chicago.
