“Se talvolta l’attenzione dello sguardo porta a un inganno della visione, in questo lavoro avviene il contrario, perché è un vero e semplice collage che però appare plausibile. Il desiderio di immagine è più forte di ciò che realmente vediamo. È come se la realtà a volte riuscisse ad essere colta dalla fotografia “al naturale”, a volte invece è necessaria una “rivisitazione”. Margeè un lavoro realizzato accostando i bordi estremi di due fotografie di paesaggio. Propriamente il soggetto della foto manca, le due strisce sono semplicemente i margini, quelli che spesso tagliamo per inquadrare meglio il nostro soggetto”.
Paola Di Bello’s practice lies at the intersection of photography, video, and the investigation of urban and social space. It emerged in close proximity to photography itself, as part of the first Italian generation to adopt the medium as a conceptual tool in the 1970s. Her work explores the visual and political implications of the technical image, developing a language that moves from archive to landscape, from documentary trace to fictional construction. Since 2006, she has held the Chair of Photography at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, where she directs the postgraduate programme in Photography. She lives and works in Milan.
