Giusy Pirrotta’s research unfolds at the intersection of moving image, sculpture, and exhibition architecture, investigating the sculptural qualities of light and its relationship to perception. Her practice incorporates ceramics, 16mm and Super 8 film, projections, slides, photography, wallpaper, and textiles to create immersive installations that blur the boundaries between art, craft, design, and cinema. In recent years, her work has embraced a more autobiographical dimension, drawing upon the iconography of the female “monstrous” throughout history, mythology, and folklore—harpies, mother goddesses, and metamorphic beings—as metaphors for bodily experience and female identity. Recent solo exhibitions include Taixunia at Dimora Artica, Milan (2019), and Il sogno di Anio at Villa Adriana and Villa d’Este, Tivoli (2025). While completing an MA in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins, London, she received the Red Mansion Art Prize, which included a residency in Beijing and a final exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts. She later completed a practice-based PhD at the University for the Creative Arts in Farnham and graduated in Painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence in 2006. She lives and works in Rome.
