Michael Fliri works at the intersection of performance, sculpture, photography, and video, investigating metamorphosis, mutation, and disguise. The protagonists of his works—often the artist himself—undergo repeated processes of transformation in which body, landscape, and imaginative metaphor merge into compelling narratives. The mask is his central motif, understood as a threshold between self and world, fullness and emptiness, life and death. He has exhibited at Kunsthalle Düsseldorf (2015), Fondazione Merz, Turin (2014), Museion, Bolzano (2011), the Moscow Biennale (2009), and the 7th Contour Biennale in Mechelen (2015), and has performed at Centre Pompidou, Paris (2012) and the Ferdinandeum, Innsbruck (2014). In 2008, he won the Museion Art Prize. He is represented by Galleria Raffaella Cortese in Milan. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, the Kunstakademie in Munich, and the Art Academy in Bergen. He lives and works between Tubre and Zurich.
